A recently uploaded listing on Blender Open Data has revealed how well the RTX 5090 performs in Blender, using the OptiX rendering engine. The result appears to line up almost exactly with what we would have expected from the Blackwell flagship, thanks to its substantially higher core count.

The recently launched GeForce RTX 5090 gaming GPU promises to bring impressive gains in gaming performance, courtesy of AI-powered frame generation capabilities. While the debate surrounding Nvidia’s reliance on AI wizardry to propel much of the promised improvements rages on, the performance advancements that the RTX 5090 and the rest of the Blackwell gaming GPUs bring to the table for render artists, appear to be much more pleasing, if a recent listing on Blender Open Data is anything to go by.

More cores, more performance, and more dollars

We already have a pretty good idea of how the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 performs in Geekbench’s OpenCL and Vulkan benchmarks, with the Blackwell flagship pulling ahead of its predecessor by as much as 37% and 16% respectively. While far from groundbreaking, the numbers that we currently have point to a serviceable generational improvement in raw performance. Now, according to the aforementioned listing on Blender Open Data, it looks like the RTX 5090 is substantially faster than the GeForce RTX 4090, at least when the Nvidia-developed OptiX rendering engine is utilized.

Running on Blender 3.6.0, the GeForce RTX 4090 managed a median score of 13,000 points, whereas the RTX 5090 handily outshined its predecessor, with an impressive score of 17,800 points indicating roughly a 37% improvement in performance. Clearly, the 33% more RT cores found in the Blackwell card are showing their merit in this ray-traced rendering benchmark. Of course, considering we have only a single result so far, the median score for the RTX 5090 may change as and when more benchmark results are uploaded to Open Data, which will allow us to have a more reliable comparison between the two flagships.
